Archive post

Today is all messed up for me. I slept in till 10:00. We're having lunch at our grandparents house and need to leave at 3:30. I need to fit a workout in that time frame. I need to eat immediately after I wake up, and have to wait two hours after eating to workout. So I'm barely going to be able to fit in into a 1:15-2:15 time slot. So, in short, I don't have much time today to look around for fresh stuff. You'll just have to live with my backlog

Yesterday

I had meant to post this yesterday, but I didn't get to it.

Yesterday we did what we traditionally do on Christmas eve: drive into the city and walk around all day. We wet with our grandparents who are visiting from out of state, so of course we had to give a grand tour of the city. Once we got there, we drove around for about an hour, and eventually stopped at the Golden Gate bridge to get some pictures.

After that, we drove back down to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf to get some food. We raided a crabstand and got tons of fresh seafood. Here you can see everyone enjoying the meal. =D

After walking around for a while, we drove up to Union Square. From wikipedia:
Union Square is the central shopping, hotel and theater district in San Francisco, California. Its name is derived from the one-block park situated between Post, Geary, Powell and Stockton Streets, but its importance as the largest collection of large department stores, swank boutiques, tourist trinket shops and salons in the Western United States continues to make Union Square a major visitor draw and downtown San Francisco a vital, cosmopolitan place. Grand hotels and small inns, and repertory, off-Broadway and single-act theaters contribute to the area's dynamic, 24-hour character.
Here are some good pictures I found on flickr: 1 2 3 4
These are some pictures we took of our family in front of the gigantic tree, and one of my sister getting 'free hugs'. Needless to say, I passed on the hugs.

One of the best things about Union Square, and San Fransisco in general is the urban architecture. There are plenty of things to jump, climb, and flip over, off of, onto, and across. In union square there's a giant stage that's about head height. Once I saw it, and all the hundreds of people congregated around it, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to do some random street tricking. I ended up doing a ton of sideflips off the stage, much to the pleasure and shock of the crowd. We only got one on video, and it was my first one, so I didn't have the height down, and I over rotated a little bit. Check it out

On a crazily random side note, I almost got on Japanese TV! There were some camera men at the square filming, so I had my sister tell them to film me doing some flips. They couldn't speak english very well and didn't film me (noobs)... >_<

All in all it was a great day. We got to check out tons of nice stores, and try out lots of products. I was totally wiped at the end of the day from all the running around did. Hope you guys had a good Christmas Eve also.

p.s. I also got to play a PS3 at fisherman's wharf. NBA2k7. It kinda sucked... Really bad textures.

Oh, and youtube cuts stuff halfway for embedding, which is probably the worst frame to pick for my sideflip video. Lol, it looks like I'm doing some sort of socially inappropriate thing. They really need to let people pick the frames they want to show for embedding.

DMV Drivers license prank parts 1 and 2 - Wow, they get away with some crazy pictures

Another WarioWare demo - looking awesome

Logic department presents:
1: Sticking your face into a moving fan- Alcohol induced retardedness has been around for centuries, but only recently have we possessed the technology to broadcast such stupidity to all who care to watch it
2: Using proper planning - Notice that although the guy permanently re-arranged the structure of his face, he did use a mat. He just missed it. A little. The one thing that it truly stupid about this stunt is how unstable the lockers are. If it moves when you impact it from the side, it will definitely flip over when you land on top of it from an angle like that
3: Wet cars should not be jumped over - The guy could have at least waited for the car to get dry. As you can see in the video, it had recently rained

Btw, If you have some time to kill, check out this neat Japanese TV show.
On the show, two celebrities pick four different types of food: 3 that they like, and one that they greatly dislike. They then have to guess which dish the other competitor disliked. And don't worry, there are subs (and I know part 4 is missing)

Best Toys EVAR

(read, the ten most funnest to play with toys everforever)

What a totally awesome list. I used to have some lawn darts. They were the special safety type that were anything but safe. They looked exactly like grappling hooks, and were used by my friends and me for just that purpose. That or we would play 'dodgeball' with them.

Awww. They have skydancers on the list. I used to love those things. No, not the barbie version, the manly insect version. A buddy of mine used to have on that looked like a giant dragonfly. Those things were so much fun. You could launch them at your friends face, play 'balltag' or 'dodgeball', or ever... well, I guess that's why they were banned.

Anyways, there are plenty more things on the list that will get you mad at your parents for not buying them when they were available. Enjoy.

The logic department here at daily linxzors is always hard at work finding examples of complete lack of logic, and the problems that rise from such situations.
In this lesson, we will learn why playing with gasoline is not a good idea unless properly planned.
Primary example
Now, what may have been going through the mind of the young lad who decided to pour gasoline on his pants? I seriously have no idea.
Lets dissect this situation.
Some kids buy a can of gasoline. Gasoline burns! They pour it on some train tracks. It makes flames when they light it. Instantly all logic goes out the door in the face of such amazing magic. They decide that since lighting train tracks on fire is fun, surely lighting their friend's pants will increase the fun exponentially! And boy, were they right....

Boxed Thoughts

Boxed Thoughts appeared on the internets around the end of 2004. I found it a few days after it came up while reading some random blog.

Now what exactly is boxed thoughts?
Boxedthoughts is a collection of thoughts posted by anonymous users. Together, these thoughts form a stream of thought, or a thoughtstream. The thoughtstream represents the flow of thought or thoughts that embodies humanity.

It works basically like this: You sign up and get a number. This number is all that distinguishes you from the masses. The main page consists of the most recent thoughts in the thoughstream. As more thoughts come in, some get pushed off. You're allowed to post a new thought every 2.5 hours. It's really quite neat.

Keep in mind before you run out and jot down your life's story that you only have a 100x100 box to write in! This is really what makes the experience. You're allowed to use some neat tags to color your box, your text, and your border, in order to make things pretty. You'll also find that lots of people leave "hidden" messages in a seemingly blank box by writing in the same color of their background. Another thing you might notice is the prevalence of emoish culture. It seems that everyone out there either has a terrible live and wants to kill themself, or all they talk about is their girlfriend or boyfriend. After you learn to ignore these people, the site can really be quite fun.

One of the most interesting things about the site is the complete anonymity you have when posting. This allows you to be uber cryptic; which is very enjoyable. So get out there and pick yourself a number! Oh, and if you want some neat color codes that mesh really well, check out this site

Enjoy! And remember, Big Brother is watching....

Top Ten Videos of 2006

Just noticed this on break's site:

The Top Ten Videos Of 06

As is the case with everything online, I've seen them before. But just for you guys, I'll go over them and provide my usual helpful commentary. Even if you've seen them before, it's worth watching them again. Here we go:

#10 The easter bunny hates you - Now what's more humiliating that being own3d by the easter bunny? I really can't think of anything.

#9 Merry go round fun! - Brought to you by the critical thinking department.

#8 Happy Mother's Day! - Siblings are so much fun

#7 Cruel Parent - Wtf. This is what your kid will remember on your deathbed. But it was worth it LOL

#6 Ok Go - Everyone saw this one. It definitely speaks for the power of viral videos. The band was relatively small and unheard of before the video.

#5 Vincent Ferrari's AOL Experience - Poor poor AOL

#4 Wizards in The Winter
- Some guy synced his lights up with some Trans-Siberian-Orchestra music, and made a video. In the end he got millions of views and a nationally aired beer commercial.

#3 Diet Coke and Mentos - nuff said

#2 That German Kid - He was probably playing CS:S. Noob

#1 Evolution of Dance - The most viewed video ever. On Youtube alone it has over 36 Million views.

Hope you enjoyed the trip down viral memory lane. Here's to a 2007 filled with even more great internet videos.

Verizon fails at math

Listen and learn...

Here's the background:

I have a Verizon unlimited data plan in the U.S. and recently crossed the border to Canada. Prior to crossing the border I called customer service to find out what rates I'd be paying for voice and data. The data rate I was quoted was ".002 cents per kilobyte."

I was surprised at the rate so I confirmed it with the representative I spoke to, and she confirmed it "point zero zero two cents per kilobyte." I asked her to note that in my account.

I received my bill and was charged $.002/KB - which is dollars - "point zero zero 2 dollars per kilobyte". As it is translated to cents would be .2 cents or 2 tenths of a cent - which is a 100 times greater rate than I was quoted.

My bill for my data usage in Canada was therefore much greater than I had expected - using the quote I was provided before my usage.

I have tried to resolve this issue with customer service reps on the phone, but noone seems to see the difference between ".002 cents" and ".002 dollars".

Here is the audio of my most recent call with them on the matter. I started recording when they put on the supoervisor - I was a bit ticked at that point.

Who knew what confusion "$1 = 100 cents" could cause?

I'm still currently on the hook for the $71 and change. Hopefully someone at Verizon will figure this out and make ammends.

You can listen to a short version of the audio here, It's totally hilarious

It hurts when I wii

Wii workout: when videogames hurt - This is so ridiculous...
Ryan Mercer, a customs broker in Indianapolis, lifts weights several times a week. But that hasn't helped much with the Wii. After playing the boxing game for an hour and a half, his arms, shoulders and torso were aching. "I was soaking wet with sweat, head to toe -- I had to go take a shower," he says. And the next morning? "I had trouble putting my shirt on," says the 21-year-old avid gamer.

What?! This is blatant stupidity. They say he "lifts weights several times a week", but he's obviously lying. He's really an obese walrus since he had to take a shower after playing Wii sports.

Battlefield Lazytown - Very good music

Evolution of gaming - Goes over some of the main genres; pretty neat

Wii

Yesterday after Church my family and I went to the mall to do some Christmas shopping. I finished very quickly as I normally do, and had a few hours to kill. After falling asleep in a $5,000 massage chair, I saw a game store demoing the wii. I grabbed my 9 year old sister and went to try it out.

The wii controller, as most of you should know by now, is what makes this console stand out. Dubbed the "wii-mote", it offers freedom that conventional controllers haven't been able to offer up to this point. For example, in some games you can swing the remote around like a tennis racket. Others make use of it like a gun. Demo unit designers encountered some problems when trying to use the traditional method of bolting the controller to the demo unit. A tether wouldn't work either. So in order to make sure people wouldn't run away with the controller, stores have set up a collateral system. It's quite humorous.

I had heard that stores were thinking about making customers hand over a credit card or an i.d. card in order to demo the wii. I guess they reconsidered though, since many kids don't have anything like that to offer as collateral. When I first walked into the store with my sister, I saw that two guys were using the demo. So, as is traditional, I took up the hawk position over their shoulders, waiting in line. When they were done, I asked if I could have a go. The guy said, "just a sec man, I wanna go get my shoes back". Since the guy didn't have a cell phone or wallet on him, he gave up his shoes in order to demo the game!

When I went up and asked to demo it, they took my cell phone, and needed something from my sister. She, being 9 years old, didn't want to take off her shoes or jacket *rolls eyes*. So I ended up playing shoeless too.

We ended up playing a few rounds of excite truck. It was really great. People were walking by and looking in the window and shouting for their friends to come over. We drew quite a crowd (Unlike the guys using it before us... one of them was looking at the wrong side of the screen the whole time and wondering why the controller lagged so much. Yea, they had skills).

The control is very intuitive. You hold the controller like a steering wheel. One button accelerates, one brakes, and the D-pad is used to boost. My 9-year old sister picked up on it right away, and I'm embarrassed to say, was in first place for the first 1/2 of the first lap. The control is very responsive. It's very easy to over correct. Smooth controlled movements are key.

I was disappointed that they weren't demoing any of the sports games, because I think that the control scheme used for those is a better test of the system. I did have a great time though, and felt more connected to the game than if I was just messing around with a regular system. My sister and I were laughing the whole time, watching each other crash, or land a sweet jump, or boost off a cliff by accident. It was great fun.

The built in rumble and speaker in the controller also adds to the fun. It's neat to hear the sound of getting a powerup right next to you.

So, that pretty much wraps up my 'review'. I recommend the system to anyone, serious gamer or not. I'm definitely going to snag one as soon as I can.

smart flatus power and wii skills? O_O

performances

So last night (Friday), my family and I went to see the Golden Dragon Acrobats perform at Zellerbach Theatre on the Cal Berkley campus. It was quite an amazing performance. I'm a tough critic, since I can normally do half the tricks that we see performed. This time however, I was thoroughly impressed. There were numerous acts, and the performance went on for more than 2 hours, with a short intermission. The troupe travels all around the world. If you hear of them stopping nearby, definitely check them out.
You can see some great pictures and video here. The video is excellent and really gives you a good idea of their style of performance.

Then, today I went out and saw The Prestige with my sister. It was a very solid film. While I know that it's a tad complicated for some people (I had to sit around explaining the plot to my 14 year old sister for 5 minutes after it was done), I ended up seeing what was going at a little past the half point. A friend of mine had tipped me off, and said to look out for some major plot twists, and so I paid extra close attention throughout the film. I don't want to ruin it for anyone, so I'll just say that the first twist (the secret to Danton's prestige) is notoriously easy to figure out. The second one (Borden's prestige) is much more difficult, but there are a few hints. It was a very neat film, and I recommend you go see very soon it before it leaves theatres.

While watching the previews at the theatre, one in particular caught my eye. The Fountain is a sci-fi/drama that asks some serious questions about immortality, and manipulating the body in general. It looks interesting. Anyone had a chance to see it yet?

Anyways, have a nice night

Snow Days

You may have noticed the new holiday themed icon I've added on my sidebar. PopularFront's 'Snow Days' is a surprisingly addictive snowflake creation toy. You can create snowflakes just like you did in times past, but with the added benefit of having an undo option. It's far too easy to lose track of time making flake after flake. Each time you make a flake, you get to see it drift slowly down in the simulated snowfield. You also get to see the creations of thousands of other users at the same time. As in real life, no two flakes are ever the same, and you'll definitely see some amazing artwork. The snowflakes you create can be titled, and you can also leave a nice holiday message that people viewing your snowflake will be able to read. Comments can be left, so that you can let people know how skilled they are (hint hint). On a completely unrelated note, if you'd like to see my various creations, search for:
Name: Austin
Location: Alameda Ca
Leave some comments, and get some ideas, then get out there and make your own!
And don't feel guilty about making too many flakes, because each one you make helps raise money for a salvation army donation.

Have fun!

Underground Culture - NEDM

We're not only a links blog here at DL... well, wait, I guess we are - But that's besides the point. I'm sure in many of your visits here you've learned many new, interesting things. Like that shrimps run on treadmills like everyone else, Japan is O_o, Videogame music isn't just background, Gears of War = sweetness, and that even monkeys can host tv shows.

Well today we're going to learn about some underground culture. I'll try to have posts devoted to topics like this every once in a while. Think of it as something like a PBS educational series, except with more exploding kittens.

Today's topic is the ominous NEDM. You may have been bantering with a buddy when suddenly, after you tell him about how you watched this great video the other day of a singing cow, he says "Dude, NEDM could make that worth watching".

What does NEDM mean? As you can see, it's an acronym... A very special acronym, for NEDM means "Not Even Doom Music".

Here is a the backstory, taken from Urbandictionary.com (wikipedia has permanently deleted and locked the article O_O)

A video was posted upon the internet in which two guys take a cat and force it into a hamster cage. They then proceeded to douse the cat with a flammable fluid, and then set the cat alight. This caused an uproar on the forum it was posted upon and was deleted, and authorities were noted. The guys who made the video went to jail.

Later, someone who had a copy of the video posted it on the fad site YTMND, with the music from the very first level of action game DOOM playing in the background. This was mostly met with horror and condemnation, although a few individuals voted 5 stars on the YTMND, in favour of the site. After seeing this, an incensed YTMND member voted 1 (the lowest score) on the sites of everyone who voted 5. On the comments, they said that Not Even Doom Music justifies burning cats. This became a fad very quickly, where people created YTMNDs with pictures of cats and references to cats and fire. Each NEDM YTMND typically has a picture of Happy Cat (A happy grey cat) and the song We Interrupt This Program by Coburn.
First off, I'd like to state that NEDM is not about animal cruelty. Torturing animals is something no one should do. I personally take it very seriously. Nevertheless, NEDM is something worth learning about.

Now,
To understand even more, watch these:
NEDM: The investigation [contains coarse written language; clean audio] - (Demonstrates how anything can be made ominous by adding fight club music)

And now that you get it, let the funny remixes fly!
Wizard of Oz NEDM

Power Rangers Vs. NEDM!

Soviet NEDM

NEDM Revenge (best)

Lex Luthor>Doom music

NEDarthMaul?!

As you can see, it was quite a popular fad during this past summer.
Anyways, hope you learned something!

Oh, and here's the music video of the insanely addicting music: We interrupt this program by Coburn
If someone could hook me up with a torrent for this that'd be swell

closing though: Aha doom!
Interesting Japanese Smoke Removal Commercial - See, why not allow people that want to shorten their lifespans to do so? Seems like a neat idea.

Super Gorio Bros IRL - What's up with the b button? O_o

More Diet Coke and Mentos - 251 bottles of Diet Coke and over 1,500 Mentos mints. Nice.

The reason the internet is great - because this video has 764,800 views, 8 awards, and 4,357 favorites.

Great Moments in VGmusic

This is a series of 'ytmnd's' that documents famous game tunes. As Djpretzel of Overclocked Remix says
this music is not disposable or merely background, but is as intricate, innovative, and lasting as any other form
Great Moments in Video Game Music

Part 1 - Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Genesis: Chemical Plant Zone - One of the most recognizable sega riffs aside from the original opening roll (listen to it here also) One of my favorite songs.

Part 3 - Super Metroid, SNES: Lower Norfair - Fire, brimstone, lava, and all that jazz. MetroidMetal has a great remix of this one.

Part 5 - A Link to the Past, SNES: Overworld theme - If you ever need some music to inspire you to go out and do some questing, this is it. (Or maybe hyrule field theme? [remixed here very well by 'ipso80'])

Part 7 - F-Zero, SNES: Mute City - If you've got twitch reflexes, then F-Zero's for you

Part 8 - CONTRA!!!, NES: Level 1 - Anytime you mention CONTRA! you must pronounce it in all caps, with at least one exclamation mark. That's how HARDCORE it is. My only remark about level 1 is why? Why make the first level so hard that you spend half your quarters on it? Psh, stupid Konami. At least it had the konami code...

Part 10 - Pokemon, GameBoy: Battle Theme - My, haven't we all heard this thousands of times? Yes, it was a plague on the world, yet we all fell prey to its enticements. (It has its uses though...)

messed up drafts

So now I know that drafts are posted at the time you save them? I made a few the other day, thinking that when I posted them they'd be at the top of the page, but when I just completed them right now, they got posted 'yesterday'. Very strange. Just a heads up so you know to scoll down a bit and see them.
And links in case you're too lazy.

Amazing

This is by far the best video I've seen in a month

Subtitles here

Will it blend?

What a great idea for a show. Now they just need to get some bunnies or... coughcough never mind.
The synopsis is this: The show is marketing for Blendtec, a company that, as you probably guessed, sells high end blenders and other kitchen utilities. The site and channel on youtube just showed up three days ago but as "acetracer" says in the channel comments:
"I commend you on one of the best marketing tactics I've ever seen. I even want one and I have no need for a blender."

I have to agree that it's a very interesting concept. On their site, they even divide up the experiments into try this at home and don't try this at home categories, so you know what will and won't mess up your blender.

And now without further delay, the episodes to date:
Ice into snow
Coke+Chicken O_o sick
Extra Value Meal - 1500 calories in a glass
Rake Handle
Marbles

(The blenders they use typically have 3 HP. I have a vitamix blender that has 2 peak horsepower. 3 hp is really powerful...)

CNC!

If you've been around here for any amount of time you should be convinced that Japan has some very tweaked ideas of entertainment. Yes, Japanese TV is a reccuring theme, but only because it's so messed up. Still in denial? Then I give you CNC - The Chimpan News Channel
If you want more, check out parts 2, 3, and 4. You really only need to watch the first one to get a good idea of how crazy it is though.

November already

Time flies eh? Pretty soon we'll start seeing Chistmas decoration at the mall, and be hearing that smarmy music all over again.

The future is brown - A very true observation

Nobody's watching "Ok Go" - It's hard to tell what's going on with this show right now. Their site is pretty cryptic, and I still can't tell if it's an underground project, or a NBC funded viral marketing type thing. We'll just have to wait and see. If any of you guys have any info about it, leave a comment

Garbage masters -
"What's your special talent?"
"Throing things into garbage cans. Yea, I'm pretty awesome"

Statue street performing, the easy way - It's really neat to see the guys who do this in San Fransisco. They're experts. I need to go over there sometime and trick for money. I'll have a 'menu' with options on it:
"Backflip - $1
Sideflip - $.50
Brannie from height - $.50
Frontflip - $1 (add a half twist - $.50)
B-twist - $.50
Combo meal! -> 3 trick chain! Includes roundoff, your choice of backflip or backhandspring, and an aerial move. Only $3! Add a wallflip for $1!
Today's special - Purposeful bail - Only $2"

Cell phone policy - I've found different teachers have different standards with cell phones. My favorite teacher was the one who would lower your grade by a whole letter if your phone went off in class. The teacher I have right now just sits there and makes fun of peoples' ring tones.
A buddy of mine told me that his teacher confiscates a persons cell phone if it goes off in class, and never returns it... Niiice...

Skills

Yay. I finally took my camera to work and shot some stuff. Check them out, and be sure to go to the site and leave a comment. Oh, and... yea, ignore my mom talking in some of them. >_<

This one's funny. I landed the first one perfectly. I didn't get my arms up on the second one, and I went sideways on the third. So I smartly decided to overcompensate.

Check it out: a front halftwist on floor. I kinda... over rotated. Not a bad crash though. I'll get some more tumbling stuff tonight. Roundoff backs, 540's and such.

Here's one from early in the summer. It was right after I learned gainers. Now I can do that trick with a full 540 ^_^
